Papa Bue
Birth: May 8, 1930
Copenhagen, Denmark
Death: Nov. 2, 2011
Copenhagen, Denmark

Musician. Born Arne Bue Jensen, he was a Danish trombonist and bandleader, chiefly considered an important proponent in the Dixieland Jazz music scene. At an early age he became fascinated with jazz, took up the trombone and had a particular interest in New Orleans music. He played in the Royal Danish Orchestra in the 1950s, also as a side man on several jazz recordings and with other bands performing at clubs and bars around Copenhagen. In 1957, he founded his Viking Jazz Band and released their first album "Papa Bue's Viking Jazz Band" (1958), followed by the single "Schlafe Mein Prinzchen" (1960), which sold over a million copies and received a Gold Disc Award. In 1969, the Viking Jazz Band was the only non-American band to perform at the New Orleans Jazz Festival and Papa Bue was honored with the "Golden Keys to the City". The group remained active into the 2000s, touring and recording with musicians such as George Lewis, Wild Bill Davison, Edmond Hall, Albert Nicholas Art Hodes and many others. Their many recordings included "Live at Mosebacke Stockholm" (1970), "Live in Dresden" (1971), "Liller" (1976), "40 Years Jubilee Concert" (1989) and "Everybody Loves Saturday Night" (1996). He died of pneumonia at age 81. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
