Sir Michael Giddings
Birth: Aug. 27, 1920
Death: Apr. 5, 2009

British Royal Air Force Air Marshal. Born Kenneth Charles Michael Giddings, he volunteered for the RAF in 1940 and trained in America. During World War II, he was a fighter pilot with 118 Squadron which flew Spitfires and Mustangs in support of the Allied advance. By the end of the war he was commander of the European 129 Squadron and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. After the war, he was a test pilot for the new jet fighters at the Royal Aircraft Establishment, Farnborough, was awarded the Air Force Cross in 1950 and a Bar to his AFC for his dangerous work in 1955. In 1958, he was appointed head of V-bomber squadrons, RAF Bomber Command and continued to serve in various senior positions until Knighted Commander of the Order of the Bath in 1975. He retired as Deputy Chief of Staff, RAF Defense in 1976. In retirement he continued to serve his country as inspector at the Department of the Environment. He was also an accomplished pianist and composed music for television programs. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
