William the son of William E. Schroeder and Betty E. Schroeder, the husband of Nancy Jo Schroeder of all of Bloomington IL, enlisted in the US Marine Corps on July 29, 1969 in Chicago IL. He arrived in Vietnam on January 26 and was assigned to Company E, 2d Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

During operation Pickens Forest, eight men in two boats were assigned to check caves along the banks of the Song Thu Bon River. As they progress southward, they were hit with heavy machine gun fire from both sides causing the flimsy crafts to sink. Their fellow Marines on shore immediately returned fire, and maneuvered to engage the enemy.

Six of the eight men managed to swim ashore and safety, four had been wounded and were evacuated. Two men of the patrol were declared MIA (Missing In Action) LCpl Schroeder was found late in the afternoon down river he had been killed by the enemy gun fire. After a prolonged seach PFC Maseda who had also been killed by the enemy gunfire was recovered on August 3, 1970.
