Indian Mutiny Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Derry, Ireland, he served as a Drummer in the 1st Bengal European Fusiliers. At the assault on Delhi, India, September 15, 1857, when the Brigade had reached the Cabul Gate, some of the Regiments were getting ammunition served out when three boxes exploded and started a fire. Drummer Ryan along with Sergeant McGuire rushed into the burning mass, seized the boxes and threw them one after the other, over the parapet into the water. By rushing into certain destruction, together they saved the lives of many at the risk of their own. More most prestigious award for gallantry, he was awarded the Victoria Cross. He died at Bengal, British India, in January 1887. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
