Ira "Babe" Hanford
Birth: Feb. 24, 1918
Fairbury
Jefferson County
Nebraska, USA
Death: Nov. 21, 2009
Ocala
Marion County
Florida, USA

Professional Jockey. Nicknamed "Babe", he was an 18 year-old rookie apprentice when he rode Bold Venture, a 20-to-1 long shot, to win the Kentucky Derby on May 2, 1936. He is one of 22 jockeys who won the Derby in their only appearance there, and the only apprentice to have done so. Hanford received a 15-day suspension for a bumping incident at the start of the race and Bold Venture went on to win the 1936 Preakness with another rider. He retired from the sport in 1953, having never participated in another Triple Crown event. On the 70th anniversary of his victory in 2006, Hanford was honored at the Kentucky Derby Museum as the Derby's oldest living champion jockey, and he was inducted into the National Racing Hall of Fame. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
