Tennis Player. Known as "Sven the Swede", he was ranked in the World Top 10 as an amateur from 1953 to 1958. In 1957, he became the first Swede to win a Grand Slam Championship and captured the Wimbledon Doubles Championships in 1958, with partner Ulf Schmidt. From 1950 to 1961, he was a member of Sweden's Davis Cup team and holds Sweden's record for most Davis Cup doubles match wins. On the Masters Senior Tour, he won the Wimbledon Grand Masters Singles Championship in 1978. He is also credited with initiating the first general meeting of the International Tennis Federation in Paris, 1968, where 47 countries agreed to the advent of open world tennis. In 2007, he was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame. He died of pneumonia. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
