Birth: 1847
Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany
Death: Jun. 25, 1876
Little Big Horn Battle Site
Big Horn County
Montana, USA

Private, Company C, 7th US Cavalry Regiment. He was killed, along with General George A. Custer and most of the Regiment, during the Battle of the Little Big Horn.

He enlisted on October 11, 1875, at age 28, in Cincinnati, Ohio, giving his previous occupation as Teamster. He had blue eyes, brown hair, a dark complexion, and was 5 feet, 6 inches tall. At the beginning of the battle, his company, under Captain Thomas Custer, was assigned to the main Custer Column, and he rode with that column to attack the Indian village from the north. When the column was overwhelmed, they retreated back up to the top of Last Stand Hill where they were wiped out. After the battle, the dead soldiers were buried where they fell, and a year later, the bodies were dug up and reburied in a mass grave, at the top of Last Stand Hill. In accordance with Indian custom, the bodies were stripped of clothing and were mutilated, often with their skulls bashed in.
