While employed as a Pennsylvania Wildlife Officer and issuing citations to a group of immigrants, he was shot and killed by the leader of an organized crime ring. After he was shot, the perpetrator deposited his body in the Mahoning River in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania. The perpetrator was later caught, convicted and sentenced to capital punishment. He was subsequently hanged in October 1909.
