Joseph was one of nine children born to J. Elijah Chase and his second wife, Elizabeth A. Sprague. he married Miss Arvilla M. Marchant on September 6, 1894 in Pocahontas County, Iowa. Joseph was a farmer. He farmed in Iowa and Minnesota. He and Villa had three children; a daughter and two sons.
