Motion Picture Director, Cinematographer, Screenwriter, Producer. He is best known for directing the big screen features "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie" (1969) and "The Poseidon Adventure" (1972). Born in London, the son of photographer and silent film director Elwin Neame and actress Ivy Close, he was educated at University College School and Hurstpierpoint College. Neame began his lengthy career in the entertainment industry as an assistant cameraman on Hitchcock's "Blackmail" (1929) and advanced to cinematographer for scores of films during the 1930s and 1940s, among them "Invitation to the Waltz" (1935), "Against the Tide" (1937), "Return to Yesterday" (1940) and "Major Barbara" (1941). In the late 1940s he turned to directing feature films, beginning with "Take My Life" (1947), while also adding screenwriter and producer credits to his resume. He co-wrote the scripts for "Great Expectations" (1946) and "The Golden Salamander" (1950), and was a producer for "Oliver Twist" (1948), "The Magic Box" (1952), and "The Horse's Mouth" (1958). His other notable films as director include "The Seventh Sin" (1957), "I Could Go on Singing" (1963), "Gambit" (1966), "Scrooge" (1970), "The Odessa File" (1974), and "Meteor" (1979). He died of complications from a fall at age 99. (bio by: C.S.)
