Alan P. Demers, 64, of Sanford, passed away at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough on Wednesday January 14, 2009 after a brave and courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Sanford on August 19, 1944, a son of Francis and Pauline (Lemire) Demers. He attended local schools graduating from Dover High School. He then served in the Air Force during the Vietnam War as a Dog Handler.

On December 3, 1971 he married the former Jackie Levesque in Sanford.

Throughout the years he remained active in the Dog Handler's Association attending meetings and reunions all over the country. For many years he was employed at Sprague Electric. He was a season ticket holder for the Sanford Mainer's. He was a huge New England Sports Fan. As quiet man he will be remembered as a devoted husband, father and grandfather (pepere).

He is predeceased by his parents and one sister, Beverly Laflamme.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Jackie R. Demers of Sanford, two daughters, Holly J. Benoit and her husband, Jody of Sanford and Heidi L. Williams and her husband, Thomas of Sanford, five grandchildren, Jodi Niesner, Abbi Rae Freeman, Alan-Michael Freeman, Austin Ham and Brooke Benoit, two step grandchildren, Tamra and Ryan Benoit. Survivors also include one brother, Raymond Demers of Acton, three sisters, Gail Cantin of Rochester, NH, Barbie Colby of Dover, NH, and Jane, step father, Bert Tuttle of Rochester, NH, as well as many nieces and nepehws.

Visiting hours for Alan will be held on Sunday, January 18 from 2-4 and 6-8pm at the Lafrance-Lambert & Black Funeral Home, 29 Winter Street, Sanford. A funeral service will be held on Monday at 10am at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in his memory to the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House, 11 Hunnewell Road, Scarborough, Maine 04074.
