The son of William and Mary Cory Vinson (both of Cornwall, England), he emigrated with his parents and siblings from Prince Edward Island to Wheatland Township, Will County, Illinois in 1845. In September 1861 he and his brother John J. enlisted as privates in Company K of the 8th Illinois Cavalry and participated in numerous battles with them, including extensive service in the Peninsula Campaign, Brandy Station, and Day One at Gettysburg. Sgt. R.C. Vinson was mortally wounded in battle at Williamsport, MD on July 6, 1863. Source: Abner Hard, M.D., History of the Eighth Cavalry Regiment Illinois Volunteers (Morningside Bookshop 1996).
