Willeta Meredith, 88, died Wednesday morning, January 2, 2008 at Eastgate Retirement Village. Willeta was born May 8, 1919 in Abilene, Kansas, the daughter of J.G. and Ida May (Hughes) Blaine. Willeta grew up in Salina, Kansas where she was educated, but graduated from Eugene, Oregon high school in 1937. She married Porter Miles Meredith on September 20, 1942. Porter had a career in the military with the United States Air Force. The Meredith's settled in North Little Rock, Arkansas where he was stationed at Jacksonville Air Force Base. After Porter retired, Willeta helped him run a golf course in North Little Rock in the late 1950’s, and on into the 1960’s. They lived several years in the mid 1970’s in Seattle. In 1980, Willeta and Porter moved to Sheridan, Arkansas and then to Broken Arrow, Oklahoma in 1989 to be near her family. Willeta loved crafts, especially sewing and quilting. She also enjoyed spending time gardening, and canning fruits and vegetables. Mrs. Meredith was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Porter Meredith on February 27, 2002, and her two sisters, Grace Blaine Cook and Letha Blaine Whitaker. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law; Jerry and Dotty Meredith of Pleasanton, TX and Sam and Theresa Meredith of Muskogee, OK; three grandchildren; Leah Michelle (Mickie) Stark, Dustin Jarrett Meredith and David Miles Meredith and great grandchild, Anna Stark. Funeral Services will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, January 18, 2008 at the Arkansas Veterans Cemetery in North Little Rock. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Willeta’s name to the building fund at Palestine Missionary Baptist Church at 10239 Highway 35 N. in Sheridan, Arkansas 72150. Funeral service arrangements are under the direction of Foster-Petering Funeral Home.
