Hamilton W. Stier was the son of Henry and Nancy Ann (Burgess) Stier. He married Harriet Dorsey Hammond on March 10, 1834 in Maryland. They were the parents of 8 children; a stillborn infant, Lavinia Ann, Frederick Alonzo, Henry Clay, Everest, Mary Priscilla (Stier) Duaney, John S. Reese, and Charlotte E (Stier) Dulaney.

When Harriet died in Feb. 11, 1849, Hamilton married Achsah L. Barbour on Oct. 6, 1851 in Frederick County, Maryland. Nine children were born to them. Kate Hamilton, Ida Pfeiffer (Stier) Sullivan, Pliny O. H. Hightland St. Clair, Nannie Freeman, Marseline A. C., Jay Hugh Stier, Alma DeVere and Mary Durant. According to his obituary, Hamilton supported his family with dry goods/grocery business. He was also postmaster in New Market, Maryland for many years -- probably located in his dry goods store.
