Rose was born in Jersey City and lived there her entire life. She lived at 138 Broadway for about 20 years with Leon Gorski- her companion. Rose and Leo were neighbors and friends to my family- the Meyers'-who lived next door. Her aunt Rose Reid and cousin Rosemary Reid lived two doors down.
Rose had a brother Charles McGovern and two sisters, Eleanor Allend and Anna Klich. She had one niece, Kay Fox, and two nephews, Robert Allend and Charles McGovern.
I met Rose on the day she moved next door to us sometime during the early 60s when I was a very young boy. She was friendly and outgoing in a very typical Irish way. You could almost detect a brogue in her speech, especially when she got her Irish up. On summer evenings she would sit outside in the front yard with my mom, Lily Sundman, Rose Cusanelli, and Mary Cusanelli and talk the night away. Sometimes her cousin Rosemary and Aunt Rose would sit with them, and they were even joined by other ladies in the neighborhood. She could be gossipy and nosy, but in a friendly way. It was part of her charm. She wasn't afraid to laugh. Rose really enjoyed this neighborly camaraderie. No one could have asked for better neighbors than Rose and Leo.
During a seemingly routine hip operation Rose died. She had a bad reaction to the anesthesia and never regained consciousness.
