Ronald John Meyers was born on August 29, 1934 to Michael Meyers and Frances Meyers (nee Hallman). He was born on the 4th floor of the Margaret Hague Maternity Hospital in Jersey City where his parents abandoned him during the height of the Great Depression. They told the hospital they lived in Bayonne, NJ. They reportedly took up residence in NYC soon after their son's birth. They were never heard from again.
He became a ward of the state. He attended school at St. Bridget's in Jersey City where he was baptized on November 8, 1936. He went on to attend several other schools in Kearney and Bayonne as well. The state would place him in foster homes, but none of these arrangements worked out. At one point he even briefly lived on a farm in Somerset, NJ. He was taken in by Joe and Angie Rodak, 134 Broadway, Jersey City. He lived with them prior to enlisting in the army in 1953, and he remained friends with them until their deaths.
From 1953-1956 he served in the US Army as an anti-aircraft artillery battery crewman stationed at Ft. Lewis, WA. He served with B Battery, 20th Battalion of the AAA. In 1956 he was honorably discharged from active with the rank of S/Sgt. He entered the reserves serving with the 324th MP Battalion. While in the reserves he lived Boylston Avenue in Seattle and worked for Boeing Aircraft from Oct.1956-Nov.1957.
Returning to Jersey City after being discharged from the army reserves he worked briefly for such companies as Wright-Patterson Aircraft and Crown Cork eventually landing a job with Block Drug Company in Jersey City, where he would work for 34 years. He also worked days as a sign painter ultimately buying the small business he originally worked for as a helper. He was a hard worker who could learn anything quickly and he could do anything with his hands.
In 1959 he married Ann Marie Baratta on January 10th in Our Lady of Mt Carmel Church, Jersey City, NJ. The union would bear five children: Ronald Joseph (b.1959), Angela Marie (1961-1999), Raymond Paul (b.1962), Roseann (b. 1966), and Annette (b. 1968). The marriage would end in divorce in the late 70s.
He married and lived with his 2nd wife, Rose Mary Reid until his death in 2003. They lived on Michigan Avenue, Port Monmouth, NJ.
His daughter Roseann gave him the only grandchild that he knew in his lifetime, Jay D'Angelo (b.1990). His daughter Annette gave him another grandson, Ryan McKenna (b. 2009).
He had several interests and hobbies. He enjoyed painting, bowling, and history, especially military history. He liked old cars, and collected Avon cologne decanters with car themes. He loved taking trips to the Pennsylvania flea markets for good finds. He was also a gun collector and a Life Member of the NRA. He held NRA instructor credentials and was a certified rifle and pistol instructor. During the 1970s he was a member of the Hudson Valley Sportsman's Association, and took both of his sons to the range almost every Saturday. He earned several awards for his shooting prowess.
