Jean Baptiste Alexandre Demange was born March 12, 1819 in Melisey, Haute-Saone, France the son of Jean Baptiste Demange and Marie Catherine Viant. He went by the name of Alexander Jean Demange in America. He was one of eleven children, nine surviving when most of his family immigrated to US arriving in New York harbor on May 5, 1835 aboard the ship Silvie de Grasse
