DEATH SUMMONS CIVIL WAR VETERAN
GEORGE W. MANLEY PIONEER RESIDENT DIES AT HIS HOME
MILITARY RITES HELD FOR CIVIL WAR VETERAN
George Whitfield Manley, 93, Civil war veteran and a pioneer of this county, died Sunday at 11:20 p.m. at his home, 707 First street, after having been ill two weeks. The body is at Bakeman & Whyte's chapel, funeral arrangements to be annocunced later. Mr. Manley leave one daughter, Mrs. Jennie Biddlecombe, who has been residing at the family home since the death of Mrs. Manley June 16, of last year; one son, Homer Manley of Langley, six grandchildren and one great grandchild. Mr. Manley was born in Crawford Co.,Pa., August 2, 1840. His birthplace was a two-room log cabin located on the Pa.&Oh. State lines. He risied in Knowx Co. until the spring of 1862 when he set out with a train of 29 wagons for the West. He arrived at Walla Walla in the autumn of that year and a few weeks later reached the Willamette Valley, Oregon. There in November, 1864, Mr. Manley enlisted in Co.F 1st OR. Vol. Inf. And served on the Coast until July 20, 1866. Mr. Manley and Miss Ann Marie McAllister, who was born in 1848 in Henry Co.,IL, and came to Oregon with her parents in a covered wagon ox team were married February 11, 1869, in Linn Co.of that state. They lived in Oregon until 1882 when they came to Snohomish county and located on government land east of Everett, which now is part of Ebey Island. They removed to First street, Snohomish in 1903. Mr. Manley was a member of Morton Post #10 G.A.R. of this city. Mr. & Mrs. Manley celebrated their sixty-fourth wedding anniversary February 11, 1933. G.A.R. conducted patriotic services, and at the G.A.R. cemetery where interment was made, a firing squad paid final tribute. Members of Earl Winehart Post of the American Legion served as pallbearers.
