Edwin M. Platts was born May 29, 1845, the son and fourth child of John and Nancy (Stearns) Platts. Edwin joined the army after the outbreak of the Civil War. He enlisted in the 5th Mass. Battery on December 3, 1861. He was mustered in as private and was promoted corporal. He was killed in action at the Battle of Fredericksburg, VA December 14, 1863.
