United States Marine Corps Commandant. He was born in Virginia but soon thereafter moved to California with his family where he was raised and received an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy. He was a member of the graduating class of 1855 and subsequently received a commission as second lieutenant in 1856. He was a member of the Paraguay expedition of 1859 and served aboard the frigate Sumpter during the civil war. During his career he was commandant of the marine barracks at Gosport, Virginia, New York City, Washington D.C., Pensacola, Florida, Mare Island Navy Yard at San Francisco, California and the Navy Yard at Boston, Massachusetts. His final command was as Commandant of the Marine Corps from 1891 to 1892.
