William's parents were Henry Knight (1847-1922) and Luvica (pronounced "Lavisa") Cardwell Knight (1848-1919). Sources state that his birth name was John Sidney Knight. After Henry Knight divorced his mother, she changed his name to William Sidney Knight. He was known as Bill to friends.

William Knight and Mary John(s) were married on December 29, 1892, in LeRoy, McLean County, Illinois. They had nine children together:

1. Bertha May Knight (Ruby) (1895-1994)
2. Carl Leslie Knight (1896-1938)
3. Clarice Nona Knight (Clendening) (1897-1966)
4. Mary Ethel Knight (Craw) (1899-1992) (known by middle name)
5. Lillian Beatrice Knight (McKinstry) (1901-1992)
6. William Wesley Knight (1902-1961) (known by middle name)

A note he wrote to the LeRoy Journal dated January 19, 1931, and postmarked from Cavendish, Vermont, summarized Bill and Mary's travels. He said they had moved away from LeRoy to Urbana "23 years ago last September", i.e. September of 1907. He said they had moved from Illinois to Vermont "12 years ago", which suggests either sometime in 1918; or January of 1919, which seems unlikely.
