O G Hess Dies Suddenly
Civil War Veteran, 91, Victim of Pneumonia
Retired Lawyer Once Made Race fo Governor of Colorado - Married Here in 1869
Oliver G Hess, 91, civil war veteran, died suddenly at 2:30 o'clock this afternoon at his home at the corner of Fulton and Third streets. Mr. Hess had been in failing health the last five years. About five days ago he contracted pneumonia but his condition did not become alarming until noon today.
He was born November 9, 1843 in Michigan. Mr Hess was a retired attorney. He practiced law in St Louis before moving to Carthage. He married Miss Izora Crow of Carthage in 1869. IN 1874 they went to LaJunta, Colo where they lived for 15 years. During his residence in Colorado Mr Hess was a candidate for governor on the Republican ticket. He was a brother-in-law of Edward Crow, former attorney general of Missouri. He enlisted in the 8th Illinois Cavalry in 1861 and was discharged in 1864.
Mrs Hess died November 10, 1931 in Carthage. A niece, Mrs Henry Bright of Carthage is his only surviving relative. Judge Howard Gray of Carthage was legal guardian for Mr Hess, having been appointed sometime ago by the probate court.
