Herman was born to Russian Jewish parents. He had 6 siblings. Hermans parents fled the Prussian war in approximatley 1904 to America leaving behind the youngest male children at the time, Meyer being one of them and Benjamin Blumberg. The parents brought the oldest children to keep them out of the war. Meyer & his younger brother stowed away on a ship bound for the U.S. They arrived unable to speak a word of English. They were able eventually to reunite with their family.
He met his wife, Mary Elizabeth Jones in Memphis, TN, where he worked, very successfully as a furrier. They were married for nearly 70 years.
His family turned their back on him for marrying a Gentile. They were Orthodox Jews. They made up in their later years and he took care of them until their deaths.
As far as I know, he had no serious illnesses during his life-time. All I know was he did have prostate cancer, diagnosed at about age 75, which had no part in his death. He died of a stroke. He was never hospitalized until a month before his death. At the time of his death he had a full head of hair and all his teeth. He was remarkably healthy his entire lifetime. He was a belove man and well known in Memphis. he could have been Mayor if not for his Jewish heritage. Even so, he was the right-hand man to the infamous mayor of Memphis, E.H. Crump.
He was crowned King of Cotton Carnival one year, which is very much like Mardi Gras in New Orleans & is considered a great honor. He was a smal man with a great deal of honor and dignity. He was very gentle and kind. Everyone who knew him, loved him. He and his wife Mary moved to Atlanta Georgia.
