In the year 1850 he came with his parents to Wisconsin and settled in the township of Henrietta where he has always resided.

He enlisted in the 12th Wisconsin Battery on March 24th, 1862, and served three years, being honorably discharged March 27, 1865, at Goldsborough, North Carolina. He participated in the engagements at Corinth, Vicksburg and Chattanooga, and was with Sherman on his march through Georgia to the sea and through the Carolinas, taking a part in most of the battles of that noted campaign.

He was united in marriage to Margaret Ann Householder on July 31st, 1867, and to them were born eight children, five sons, James B., of Bloom City, Irvin and R. Besides his children he leaves 17 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, and one brother, James Norman of Richland Center. His wife passed away September 28, 1929.

He was actively engaged in farming near Woodstock until 27 years ago when he moved to the village of Woodstock where he lived a quiet and useful life, taking part in the affairs of life until less than two years ago. His health began to fail, but he was confined to his bed only a little more than a week.

Funeral services were held at two o'clock Sunday afternoon from the Methodist church at Woodstock and interment was made with military honors in the Woodstock cemetery.
