Services Held For Katherine Jo Allen, 21, of Kansas City

Funeral services for Katherine Jo Allen, 21, of Kansas City, were held on Wednesday, August 22, at McGilley Mid-town Chapel with burial in Memorial Park Gardens Cemetery in Kansas City.

Miss Allen, a senior at Kansas City Art Institute, was shot to death in Kansas City on Sunday, Aug. 19, a week before she was to have been a key witness in a rape case.

Born Oct. 10, 1957, in Kansas City, Miss Allen was a member of the United Methodist Church having joined the faith at the age of 11. She was a very active Campfire Girl for many years, reaching all the levels to be obtained in Campfire work.

She graduated from Northeast High School in 1975 where she was a member of the cheerleading team and band. She received an associate in arts degree from Penn Valley College in 1977, and would have graduated from Kansas City Art Institute with a bachelor in fine arts degree next spring.

Miss Allen was the daughter of the late Thomas J. Allen and Reba Hardcastle Byrd, formerly of Ava.

She is survived by her mother, Mrs. Reba Byrd, and her step-father, Albert Byrd, Kansas City, Kan.; one sister, Mrs. Patti Mandina of Gladstone, Mo.; and her grandmother, Mrs. Josie Allen, of Ava. She was also a niece of Mrs. Marvin Gentry of Ava.

Kathy Jo Allen was the victim of a murder for hire to prevent her from testifying at an upcoming trial. The killer was executed on July 21, 1993. The man who arranged for the murder is serving a life sentence in Missouri for a different murder.
