A Civil War letter from John to Sallie;

May, 19, 1861

My Dear Sallie,

We reached Richmond safely and were marched to inspection which wearied us considerably. About night we were marched into camp. The first night we saw hard times having only a small piece of bread and a very small bit of dirty salty fat meat to eat - At night we slept in a bunk which was open in the front, with a little straw sprinkled on the ground, the wind blowing fresh upon us. The next day we sweeped out and planked up our stall, adding greatly to our comfort after which we had to go after our ration about a half a mile. You would have laughed could you have seen me lugging as much loaf bread as I could hold in my arms. We are faring well - I feel as if I was in an unknown land, being not accustomed to the continual roll of the drums, martial law and the gleam of bayonets and swords. Our boys are in fine spirits and be proud you have husbands and sons who have courage enough to meet and drive an insulting enemy from our native soil. I will write more next time but must close now as the drum is beating for us to turn out - Excuse mistakes for there is such fuss and noise around me that I can hardly write. Write soon and direct your letters care of Capt. Clayton Coleman of the F.H. Greys -
Give my love to Ma and all friends, also our servants and Pa's. And accept for yourself my warmest and fondest love,

Your affect husband,

J.B. Pendleton
