Sgt. Harold Shadbolt Dies Of Injuries in the Pacific

Sergeant Harold Shadbolt, 29, a former mill worker here before he enlisted in the air corps March 10, 1942, has died from injuries received in the Central Pacific theater of war, his father, Eugene Shadbolt of Machias, has been advised by the War Department. Sergeant Shadbolt had served overseas for nearly two years and during his service in the South Pacific, his group was honored by citations for Washington. Before he entered the service he was employed by the M. Murphy & Son, last block mill firm here and later engaged in farming. Besides his father, he leaves one brother, Clarence Shadbolt, a farmer on the Beaver Meadows - Machias Road, and three sisters, Dorothy, Ida and Delia. Memorial services will be held Thursday afternoon, April 6th, at two-thirty in the Community church, Riceville, near West Valley.

(Note: Harold was originally interred in the Post Cemetery, Schofield Barracks. When the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl was established in 1949, his remains were moved to their final resting place along with many of the servicemen who were also interred in the Post Cemetery.)

Cpl Harold E. Shadbolt, cook, died at the 76th Station Hospital, Kaneohe, T.H. from head injuries sustained in a fall from a truck. (Note: The 42nd Bombardment Squadron (Heavy) was one of the squadrons stationed at Hickam Field on 7 December 1941 when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. The Squadron participated in the Battle of Midway and in 1942 was ordered into the South Pacific. On March 19, 1944, the squadron moved by truck to it's new station at Kahuku Army Air Base, Kahuku, T.H.)
