Tributes paid after former Forest player Sid Ottewell dies aged 92-

FORMER Nottingham Forest player Sid Ottewell has died at the age of 92.

Mr Ottewell, who was believed to be the oldest living former Forest player, passed away at Edward House nursing home, in Eastwood, on Tuesday.

Mr Ottewell was born in Holbrook, Derbyshire, in 1919, and was one of four children.

He lived in the village until he was 16, playing football for Derbyshire Schoolboys.

He signed as a player for Chesterfield in 1936 and made his debut in a Second Division match against Blackburn Rovers, aged 17, in April 1937.

His career was put on hold during the Second World War, with Mr Ottewell serving as a physical training instructor in the Royal Air Force.

His son, Peter, 62, of Newthorpe, said: "He spent a lot of the war in India. Being a professional footballer, he used to play exhibition matches for the troops."

After the war, Mr Ottewell played for Birmingham and Luton Town before signing for Forest in 1948.

An inside forward, he made 32 appearances for the Reds, scoring three goals, before leaving for Mansfield two years later. He made 67 appearances for the Stags between 1950 and 1952, scoring 21 goals.

He then moved to Scunthorpe before retiring as a player at Spalding United in 1953.

Mr Ottewell enjoyed a successful career as a manager at non-league level with Lockheed Leamington, leading the club to the Birmingham & District League title, the Birmingham Senior Cup and the Midland League title during nine years in charge.

Mr Ottewell married his wife, Eileen, in Ilkeston in 1947. The couple settled in Wollaton and had two children, Peter and Carole, who is now 63 and lives in Wiltshire.

The couple moved to Peters Close, Newthorpe, eight years ago to be nearer to their son.

Mrs Ottewell died six years ago, aged 81.

Of his father, Peter said: "Dad was a family man he loved his family and kids.

"He was an absolute gentleman. Everyone said how nice he was and nothing was too much trouble for him."

Nottingham Forest has also paid tribute to Mr Ottewell.

In a statement, the club said: "The club would like to extend sincere condolences to his family and friends."

Mr Ottewell is survived by his two children, 12 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be at Bramcote Crematorium on Friday February 17 at 12.30pm.
