Hall of fame Professional Wrestler. Born Sherri Russell in New Orleans, she made her wrestling debut in the American Wrestling Alliance (AWA) in 1980. Five years later, in 1985, she became the AWA Women's Champion, after defeating reigning champion Candi Devine. Their rivalry lasted more than a year, with the championship going back and forth from one to the other several times. During this period, she began honing her skills as a manager, while taking "Playboy" Buddy Rose and "Pretty Boy" Doug Somers to the AWA Tag Team Championship. On June 28, 1986, Sherri would win the AWA Women's Championship for the third and last time from Candi Devine. On July 24, 1987, "Sensational" Sherri entered the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), at that time known as World Wrestling Federation (WWF) where she pinned her trainer and mentor, the "Fabulous Moolah," and became Women's Champion. Sherri was a fighting champion, defending her title against Debbie Combs, Velvet McIntyre, and Desiree Peterson among others. She was known as someone who would use any means necessary to win, even if it meant using illegal methods. The feud with Moolah continued in 1989 as the captains for the first-ever female Survivor Series teams. Sherri held the championship for over a year before losing it to Rockin' Robin. While continuing to wrestle professionally, in 1990 she began focusing on managing other wrestlers: her first wrestler was "Macho Man" Randy Savage. It was during this time that she became "Sensational Queen Sherri." She appeared in 1994 in the World Championship Wrestling as "Sensuous Sherri," manager of Ric Flair during his feuds with Sting and Hulk Hogan. After parting with Flair, she joined with wrestler Harlem Heat, becoming known as "Sister Sherri" and going on to seven WCW Tag Team Championships. Sherri was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2006. (bio by: Hilda Duell)
