George was the son of James Cardwell and Sarah "Sally" Crockett (half-sister of Anthony Crockett). He was born in 1806, in Mercer County, Kentucky. He died on 7 Mar 1882, in Maripose County, California.
He served in the Mexican War in the Second Regiment of Kentucky Foot Volunteers - Unit 10. His rank was First Lieutenant George N. Cardwell, Adjutant. He was enrolled May 19, 1846, at Harrodsburg, Mercer County, Kentucky by Capt. Phillip B. Thompson. He mustered in on June 9, 1846, at Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky and mustered out on June 8, 1847, New Orleans, Louisana.
On April 24, 1873, the Kentucky Legislature directed that the remains of General Cary H. Fry, Colonel Theodore O'Hara, and Adjutant George N. Cardwell be returned to Kentucky and buried in the State military lot at Frankfort, and that their graves be marked with appropriate stones.
