Ernest (Ernie) Varga passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 3, 2011 after a brief battle with cancer. Ernie was born on the family homestead in the Otthon District on January 15, 1926, the seventh child of Steve and Elizabeth (nee Czinkota) Varga. As a young boy, he attended West Otthon School and completed his grade eight. He then took his grade nine by correspondence. For a short period of time, Ernie left the farm and worked in Ontario, but being a farmer at heart he returned home to help out and eventually took over the family farm. Ernie loved music and would gather with family and friends to play the accordion and banjo. In his younger years you could find him playing at dances and gatherings in the area. In later years family and friends would meet at his home for a good old jam session. Ernie was very gifted with his hands and took up wood working as his hobby. The fine and intricate work that he produced showed his patience and eye to detail. He loved to share his work with family and friends and display his creations in his home. One thing Ernie loved and would never give up was a good chew of tobacco. His family will always remember Ernie as a quiet man, with a good sense of humor and always ready with a good joke or two to share. He remained on the original family homestead until early 2009, when he moved into Yorkton and became a resident at the Bentley Retirement Home. Ernie was predeceased by his parents, Steve and Elizabeth, his sister Margaret and brothers, Alec (Olga), Steve (Lily), Paul, Ted and Joseph. He leaves to mourn his death and to celebrate his life, his two sisters-in-law, Olga(Joe's wife) and Olga(Ted's wife), numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and many dear friends.
