Mount Etna Morris , who served three terms as Missouri treasurer and three terms as director of revenue, died Friday at St. Mary's Health Center in Jefferson City. He was 87.
Mr. Morris had been hospitalized since Monday, when he fell at a nursing home where he had been a resident for most of the last year. A funeral service is scheduled for 2 p.m. today at the Houser Funeral Home in Jefferson City.
Gov. Phil Donnelly appointed Mr. Morris , a Democrat, as state finance commissioner in 1945; a year later, the governor made him the first state revenue director.
At a time when the Missouri state treasurer could not succeed himself in office, Mr. Morris was elected to four-year terms as state treasurer in 1948, 1956 and 1964. He was the only person to serve three terms as Missouri state treasurer.
Between those terms, Govs. Donnelly and John Dalton appointed him as state revenue director in 1953 and 1961, respectively. His political career ended in 1967 after his third term as treasurer.
Mr. Morris ' banking career began in 1928, when he organized a bank in Miller, Mo. He was elected to the state House in 1932 and again in 1934, representing Lawrence County. After those two terms, he became executive officer of Trenton National Bank.
He is survived by his wife, Margery Morris of Jefferson City; a son, John A. Morris of Jefferson City; a daughter, June Croce of St. Louis; a stepson, Mark Etna Adamson of Jefferson City; a stepdaughter, Megan Diane Adamson of Hartford, Conn.; and a sister, Lucile Upton of Springfield, Mo.
