Fatal Wreck Detailed
A Patterson man was killed and another Patterson man injured Tuesday when a pickup truck was hit by a tractor trailer on a fog shrouded Georgia Highway 32 near its intersection with Zirkle Road, said the Georgia State Patrol.
Jessie Daniel "J.D." Hughes, 63, of Patterson, was taken by Pierce County Emergency Medical Service ambulance to Satilla Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced
dead, said Donna Dismuke, post secretary.
The semi driver, Robert Lee Hutchinson, 56, of Patterson, was also transported by ambulance to Satilla Regional Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries, said Dismuke.
Heavy fog is thought to have contributed to the accident. Georgia 32's east-bound lanes were closed for a time while the wreckage was cleared.
Hughes, driving a 1999 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck, was westbound on Georgia 32 when his truck veered off the north shoulder of the road. Dismuke said he attempted to re-enter the highway and failed to see Hutchinson's tractor trailer approaching, also westbound. The rig struck the driver's side door of the Hughes truck, both vehicles then careening down an embankment.
Trooper Greg Stone was in charge of the accident investigation.
