Officer Sullivan was sitting in his patrol car at 68th and Myrtle filling out a report, when a man pulled up along side him. After a short conversation the man shot him in the chest. A telephone company workman was nearby and witnessed the incident. Later, the killer was arrested and it was learned that Officer O'Sullivan had testified against him in a drug trial in November and had answered disturbance calls at his house twice in the week before the shooting. The man was convicted and sent to prison but has since been released.

Officer O'Sullivan was born in Ireland, and became a United States citizen in 1971. He joined the Kansas City Police Department that same year.
