|Death: ||Jul. 21, 1964|
Son of Hugh Francis and Jean (Palmer) O'Neil. Stepson of Jason Wade. Brother of Rory O'Neil, Thomas, Kate and Julie Wade. Hugh was the grandson of General Tire's founder.
Gave his life to save two victims of a street cave-in during a severe summer storm. A hole opened up on Tallmadge Parkway in Akron and a car containing a woman and two children dropped into the rain-swollen storm sewer. Hugh, who was driving by on his way to work at the time of the disaster, stopped, and with the assistance of Patrolman Ronald Rotruck, had himself lowered into the hole and was able to save two persons before a further cave-in of the hole claimed his life. Rotruck and the remaining child were also killed. Hugh's body was recovered the following day from the Cuyahoga River. Tallmadge Parkway was later renamed Memorial Parkway in remembrance of the victims.
