First Lieutenant, United States Marine Corps
This is a quote from my Dad's Guadalcanal diary:
"February 20, 1943 It was quite bad today. An SBD ran out of gas and crashed on the outskirts of Henderson Field. The pilot (Lt. Young) was killed and gunner pretty banged up. He ran out of gas and had to make a forced landing."
Of note: 1st Lt. Young's remains were originally buried on Guadalcanal but re-interred at Arlington National Cemetery at the request of his mother in 1947.
An additional note: 1st Lt. Young was from Petersburg, Virginia
Homer Tilton Young (1883 - 1948)
Bessie Mattox Young (1885 - 1970)
