Bishop Salvador Montes de Oca, was born in Carora, Lara, Venezuela, on October 21, 1895, to Don Andrés Montes de Oca and Doña Rosario Montes de Oca.

At the early age of 31, Salvador was appointed Bishop of the Diocese of Valencia en Venezuela, receiving his episcopal consecration on October 23, 1927, from future Cardinal, Msgr. Fernando Cento, assisted by Bishops Marcos Sergio Godoy and Enrique María Dubuc Moreno.

Due to political conflicts during the Presidency of Juan Vicente Gómez, the Bishop resigned his office on December 22, 1934, and was in turn named Bishop of the Titular See of Bilta. He moved in exile to Italy, where he resided with the Padri Sacramentini, joining shortly afterwards the Order of the Carthusian monks, living a humble life, in deep prayer behind the Carthusian walls of the monastery of Farneta, Maggiano, Lucca.

On September 10, 1944, aged 48, the Bishop and a number of fellow monks were executed by a Nazi firing squad, on the accusation of giving refuge to Italian political patriots.

In 1947, a paramedic team was able to locate and identify his remains, under the direction of a certain Dr. Mariotti. Successively, they were transferred to his native Venezuela and interred at the Cathedral of Valencia. A monument in his honor has been since erected in Valencia.

On March 11, 2017, Msgr. Reinaldo Del Prette, his successor in the see of Valencia, initiated the cause for Montes de Oca's beatification.
