Death: Mar. 23, 1952

Professional Baseball Player. Stephen Richard Sundra played Major League Baseball for nine seasons and was affectionately referred to by teammates as "Smokey". He was discovered by a Cleveland Indians scout, signed to a baseball contract, and traded to the New York Yankees in 1935. He made his Major League debut with the Yankees on April 17, 1936 and pitched 2 scoreless innings. He was sent back to the minor leagues for nearly two years until 1938, when he was recalled to finish the season with the Yankees. He appeared in 25 games during that season and received a championship ring, although he did not pitch in the World Series. His best season was the following year when he won 11 games in 12 decisions, posted a 2.76 Earned Run Average, and collected his second championship ring when the Yankees swept the Reds in the World Series. Sundra appeared in game four and pitched 2 2/3 innings, yielding four hits, a walk, and three unearned runs. His contract was purchased by the Washington Senators in 1942 and he was involved in a trade to the Saint Louis Browns later that season, with whom he spent the remaining years of his career. He compiled 208 innings and won 15 games in 1943, while making only three appearances the following year when he joined the United States Army during World War II. He pitched in two games for the Browns when he returned from the war but was released on May 29, 1946. He never played in the Majors again. He filed a lawsuit against the Browns under the G. I. Bill of Rights claiming that he should have been on the roster for at least a year after his discharge from the military and that he was entitled to a full salary. He lost the case in a Federal Court decision in 1949. He died from cancer a few years later when he was 41 years old.  (bio by: K Guy)
