John Daniel was born to Thomas William and Sarah Ann Griffin Bellamy in Fluvanna County, Virginia. He was first married to Miss Shoemaker. Two children born to them were Sarah Malinda and Al. He married Mary Cline on October 2, 1855, in Claiborne, Tennessee. They had eight more children. The family moved from Tennessee to Illinois in 1870. John was a carpenter and builder of homes, many of them in western Franklin County, where he first began contracting.
The family moved to Perry County, Illinois in 1896 and remained there until all their children were grown. In their old age, John and Mary lived among their children. At the time of John's death Mary is in Salem, Oregon with son James, and daughters Malinda and Clora. John also spent some time in Oregon until 1918, when he returned to Illinois to live with son John G in Benton. He was a Mason and Methodist since childhood.
John died suddenly from a stroke at age 89 years, four months and 11 days of age. He had been on good health and active until the day he was stricken.
