Born in Green, Kansas Leota was the middle child of two brothers, Earl and Ilo. She graduated from high school in Clay Center, Kansas. Leota met her husband Ernest Hartner while teaching elementary school in Clay County, Kansas. Ernest was an uncle of two of her students. They married December 2, 1926.
In 1936 the Hartner family moved to a farm in Texas County, Missouri. They also farmed in Henry County before moving to Clinton, Missouri in 1956. Leota worked at Golden Valley Hospital before retiring.
Leota and Ernest were married 67 years at the time of her death. The mother of five children and nine grandchildren, her greatest joy was cooking for her family. She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church having taught Sunday School and serving as President of the Presbyterian Women's Organization.
