Sarah is a daughter of James and Phebe A. Tompkins.

From "The Times" Clay Center, Kansas
The passing of Mrs. I.G. McMillan brought to a close a long and useful life. She was truly a pioneer mother, who in her more active years, rendered loving service to her family and friends. In later years they were able to repay her for her thoughtful care over them. She will be missed as only a mother is missed from the family circle. Her children and grandchildren always gathered to pay her due honors on her birthday anniversary, May 11, and were looking forward to a happy reunion next month, when they would have celebrated her ninetieth birthday. During the period of time she witnessed many changes in every phase of life. The story of her life is written as follows:--

Sarah E. McMillan was born in Erie County, New York, May 11,1845, and passed away at the home of her youngest daughter (Blanche Wood) at Newton, Kansas, Sunday evening, April 21, 1935, at the advanced age of 89 years, 11 months, and ten days.

She was married to I.G. McMillan October 22, 1868 in Newstead, New York state. Mr. and Mrs. McMillan moved to Lansing, Michigan where they lived 11 years. Their three older children were born there. Then wishing to seek a new home, they came to Kansas in the spring of 1880 and here the other two children were born. For many years the McMillan home was one mile west of Green, and there they braved the hardships of early pioneer life.

In the fall of 1903 Mr. and Mrs. McMillan decided to retire from active life, so they moved to Green where they kept their home until the husband passed away January 2, 1911. Since then Mother McMillan has made her home with her children.

Mrs. McMillan was converted and joined the Free Methodist Church in 1873 at DeWitt, Michigan. She transferred to Clay Center after coming to Kansas.
