An only child, Michael is the son of Christian and Susan Musselman of Saxony, Germany. Their ship came to America, landing in New York City May 1, 1846. The family lived in Lancaster, Pennsylvania for a year before moving to Jo Davies County, Illinois.
Michael married Elizabeth Durrstein October 16, 1853 in Jo Davies County, Illinois, by John Bahr, believed to be Michael's uncle. By 1878 Michael owned a farm of 160 acres. He and Elizabeth are the parents of eleven children, ten boys and daughter Louisa. In an 1890 biography children John, Louisa, Christian, Gustav, Ernest, and William were listed as living.
Michael was a Mennonite minister for a short time in Jo Daviess County, Illinois and served as school director nine years, one term as trustee, and twelve years as road commissioner. He was a Democrat.
After the death of Elizabeth, Michael married Mrs. Ida Fuss Baier March, 1878, in Jo Daviess County, Illinois. They moved to Clay County, Kansas in 1879 with other Musselman family. Michael and Ida are the parents of daughters Emma and Clara.
Michael farmed with the assistance of his son in Clay County, Kansas, but also worked in the real estate and loan business in the nearby town of Clay Center.
Sometime after 1890 Michael, Ida and daughters moved to Denver, Colorado.
