Thomas is a son of James Gaskin and Nancy Mary Finley Berry. Father James was born December 7, 1792 in Christian County, Kentucky, and died in 1875, Dade County, Missouri. Mother Nancy Mary born in South Carolina is a daughter of Howard and Elizabeth Helm Finley.

Known as Uncle Tom around Dade County, Thomas was given 160 acres of good land by his father, and took care of both his parents in their declining years. He was 42 when he married Berdit Smith, she was almost 33.

From his obituary July 14, 1932--
Thomas H Berry was born June 17, 1841, and died July 4, 1932, age 91 years, 17 days. He was the youngest of nine children, four boys and five girls, all who lived to a mature age, but have now passed on. He married Berdit S. Smith October 28, 1883. To this union were born three children, two boys and one girl. One of the boys Elbridge M. died in March,1927. The other two are Cytha M. McConnell, who cared tenderly for her father in the old home for the past five years, and Howard Berry, whose home is in Everton. There also remain eight grandchildren and one great grandchild. Mrs. Berry died at the old home ten years ago.

Mr. Berry was converted and united with the Christian Church while yet a young man, and held membership to the end of his life in the Dadeville congregation. He served in the Civil Was in Company I, 15 Regt.of the Missouri Volunteers of the Union side during the entire war. He lived on the farm where he died his entire life, and in that time the farm was in three counties; Barry, Polk and Dade. Mr. Berry's death marks the passing of one of the old landmarks of the county. He was a man of good report among his neighbors, and had a high sense of honor. His oldest acquaintances held him in highest esteem. He had earned this regard as well as any man. The funeral will be held in the Christian Church in Dadeville. - JR Crank
