Charles married first wife Marian Barbato in 1941. She was the mother of his only son, David Charles Middleton.
His second wife was Lucille K. Robinson whom he married on May 20, 1961 in Washington State. They remained married until her death in Sept 1986.

Charles enlisted in the Marines in 1933 and got out after approximately four years as a Corporal. When war broke out in 1941 he sought to re-enter the Marines. They told him they'd bring him back in as a Sergeant. The Army recruiter offered to bring him into the Army as a commissioned officer. He retired in 1959 as a Major in the US Army.

The Dinner Invitation
Charles had lived most of his life on the West Coast after retiring from the Army. After losing his second wife the previous September he decided to relocate back to Georgia. Driving a truck and trailer loaded with his personal effects he began the drive from Gig Harbor Washington to Georgia, with a detour through Reno Nevada.
At some point in the trip, and presumably when closest to his son's residence in San Francisco, Charles called David and proposed they get together for dinner. David was a practicing chiropractor at the time and the drive to meet his father en route was expected to be about four hours one way. Feeling the demands of his practice David demurred and the proposed dinner never took place.
Charles checked into a motel in Tonopah Nevada and dropped dead of heart failure in the parking lot. David tells of feeling an unprecedented sharp pain in his chest right about the time that his father died. Many years have passed and David still regrets not accepting his father's dinner invitation.
