Vernon Oliver Slayter, Maj. USAF, Ret.
(May 29, 1929 - August 17, 2012)

Funeral services for Mr. Vernon Oliver Slayter will be at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, August 22, 2012 in the chapel of Hixson Brothers in Pineville with Dr. Cliff Stewart and Rev. Mike Shamblin officiating. Burial will be in Dry Prong Cemetery with full military honors. Visitation will be from 5:00 until 8:00 Tuesday and from 8:00 a.m. until time of service Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mr. Slayter, 87, of Dry Prong, died Friday, August 17, 2012 at Tioga Manor Nursing Home.

Mr. Slayter was a Major in the United States Air Force and a member of New Prospect Baptist Church. He was a former member of Calvary Baptist Church.

Major Slayter is preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Billye J. Slayter; parents, Robert Thomas Slayter and Mae Deen Slayter; a brother, Eulas Slayter; sister, Carin Murrell.

Survivors include his son, Michael V. Slayter and wife, Jane; daughters, Pam S. Rounds and husband, Heath, and Sonya S. Hill and husband, Matthew; grandchildren, Timothy Slayter and wife Stephanie and Matthew Slayter and wife, Katie; great grandchildren, Christopher Rounds, Samantha Smith, Sara H. Hill, Andrew Slayter, Noah Slayter, Josie Slayter, Rex Slayter, and Claudia Slayter; sister, Marjorie Gianniny; sister-in-law, Alvern Archer; and numerous nieces and nephews;.

Pallbearers will be Christopher Rounds, Heath Rounds, Stuart Archer, Benjamin Archer, Matthew Slayter and Timothy Slayter.
