Major Cleo Clark Matkins, Jr.
Shreveport, LA- Funeral services celebrating the life of Cleo Clark Matkins, Jr., 82, will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday May 12, 2012 in the Broadmoor Baptist Church Memorial Chapel in Shreveport, LA. Officiating will be Dr. Tom Harrison. Interment will follow with full military honors at Centuries Memorial Park. Visitation will be held on Friday, May 11, 2012 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Centuries Memorial Funeral Home.
Cleo was born on June 2, 1929 in Monroe, LA and passed away on May 6, 2012 in Shreveport, LA. Major Matkins was a Radar Navigator/Bombadier in the United States Air Force and served his country in Vietnam. He retired from the Air Force in 1973 after 22 years of faithful and loyal service to his country. He flew KC-97's, B-47's and B-52's. Cleo attained over 5,000 flying hours in the B-52's. Cleo loved his family and especially enjoyed spending time with his seven grandchildren. He loved teaching his children and grandchildren about the things that he enjoyed, especially his Christian beliefs. Major Matkins was a member of Broadmoor Baptist Church where he served as a deacon for many years. He loved hunting, fishing, gardening and the outdoors. Cleo had a fond interest in football and baseball and seeing his grandchildren play and excel in these sports.
Preceding Major Matkins in death were his parents, Cleo Clark, Sr. and Mabel Matkins.
Left to cherish beautiful memories of Cleo is his wife of 60 years, Barbara Chapman Matkins of Shreveport, LA; children, Richard C. Matkins and wife Ingrid of Shreveport, LA, Edmund M. Matkins and wife Johnita of Houston, TX and son, Clinton, Linda Carpenter and husband Pat of Lampasas, TX and children, Carter, Cory and Carley, Jonathan W. Matkins and wife Kelley of Shreveport, LA and children, Fielding, Maggie and Katie; siblings, Lytle "Snow" Matkins and wife Hildred, Sara Gilliland and husband Bob, William "Bill" Matkins and wife Judy and Kay Dixon and husband J.J. Mr. Matkins is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Honoring Major Matkins as pallbearers will be Fielding Clark Matkins, Carter Carpenter, Cory Carpenter, Clinton Matkins, Walter Pullen and Kevin Scott Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be Charles Carter and Jeffery Chapman.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests that donations be made to the Broadmoor Baptist Church Building Fund, 4110 Youree Drive, Shreveport, LA 71105 or to the Daughters of The American Revolution Library Lay Light Restoration, 1776 D Street Northwest, Washington, D.C. 20006.
