CBC Senior, Doing a Favor For Friends, Killed By Car
by Clark Porteous, Press-Scimitar Staff Writer

Thomas Stephen Lipsmeyer, 21, a Christian Brothers College senior honor student from Little Rock, was killed by a car while doing a good turn on his return trip from Christmas holidays.

It happened on Hwy 70, a half mile east of Hicks Station, 15 miles east of Forrest City, Ark., at 8:10 last night.

Lipsmeyer was driving to Memphis with Anna Mae Gazo, Little Rock, his cousin, and Ronnie Dobrovich, of near Stuttgart, both sophomores at Siena College.

His car developed fuel pump trouble and he stopped at a filling station. Efforts were made to fix the pump, but it didn't stay fixed. The car stoalled about a mile from the station.

Lipsmeyer walked back to the station and called CBC to get his roommate, Ed Hess, Vincennes, Ind., to come for them.

Lipsmeyer went back to the car. Then, the girls decided they should call Siena, to tell the Sisters they would be late.

Lipsmeyer and Miss Gazo started back to the filling station, leaving Miss Dobrovich with the stalled car.

State Trooper Robert Gill, who investigated, said Charles R. Burris, 58, Little Rock, was driving a 1963 Chevrolet west and was attempting to pass another car. Lipsmeyer was walking west in the eastbound traffic lane, the trooper said, and was bit by Burris' car.

Miss Gazo was not hit by the car.

Lipsmeyer was taken first to Forrest City Memorial Hospital, and died in an ambulance en route to Baptist Hospital in Memphis. The accident is still under investigation.

Lipsmeyer would have graduated in mechanical engineering in June. He had been in the top 10 of his class and on the honor roll 3 1/2 years at CBC, had qualified for teh 1964 Who's Who in American Universities and Colleges, was vice president of the CBC Engineers Club and secretary of Circle K, a service organization for outstanding students.

He was the son of Mr. S. H. Lipsmeyer, Little Rock.

(Side Note from Anna Hayes - His father set up the Thomas Lipsmeyer Award at CBU in memory of his son)
