Enlisted 14 June 1861 in Wisconsin, serving on the Union side.

Mustered in July 2, 1861, near Racine, Wisconsin. Company A, 4 Regiment, Wisconsin Cavalry. Transferred August 23, 1865, to Company C. Re-enlisted. Was a Vet Vol Was discharged at Brownsville, Texas May 28, 1866.

Found on the 1850 US Federal Census in Richmond TWP., Walworth County, Wisconsin. He was 11 years old, living with Joseph, Hannah (Enos), and Harriet Humphrey at that time. Is Harriet his mother?

On the back of his picture, it says he was a cousin of Abigail Jane "Abby" Humphrey-Richards. This would seem to make him a grandson of Joseph and Hannah, above, but his exact parentage still eludes us.
