Vernon L. Wolken, 77, a lifelong Rantoul farmer, passed away at 9:20 a.m. Monday (Oct. 12, 2009) at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.

He was born in rural Rantoul, Il. to Heye and Marie Sieberns Wolken. He married Helen L. Post on Dec. 17, 1952, at the American Lutheran Church, Rantoul. She preceded him in death on Jan. 15, 2009.

He is survived by two sons, David (Denise) Wolken of Thomasboro and Dennis (Carol Whitcomb) Wolken of Paxton; one daughter, Deborah (Douglas) Abolt of Charleston and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Virgil and a brother, Alvin.

Vernon grew up on the family farm and continued to live and farm there throughout his life. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953 - 1954. He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Flatville where he had served on the church council. He was also a member of the Royal American Legion Post 996 and the Champaign County Farm Bureau. He was a former member of the Thomasboro School Board and the Beckman Cemetery Association. He enjoyed restoring old tractors and spending time at home.
