MANCHESTER CENTER - Nadine and Richard "Dick" Hayes of Manchester Center died of injuries sustained in an automobile accident on Saturday, Feb. 21.
Nadine was born in Bennington on April 11, 1938, the daughter of Margaret G. and Howard G. Marsden. She was educated in Manchester schools and graduated from Burr and Burton Seminary. She attended Transylvania University in Kentucky and Champlain College in Burlington, Vt.
Dick was born in Manchester on April 15, 1937, the eldest son of Eleanore H. and Walter Hayes.
He attended Manchester schools and graduated from Burr and Burton Seminary and cum laude from Norwich University in Northfield, Vt., with a degree in mechanical engineering. He was a charter member of the Beta Chapter of Tau Beta Pi, the national engineering honor society.
He served as an officer in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and was a project engineer for Allis-Chalmers and Pratt & Whitney Aircraft before returning to Manchester to manage the Manchester Water Co. and the family's excavating, gravel and development businesses.
On Aug. 25, 1957, Dick and Nadine, childhood sweethearts, were married. Together they raised a family, worked for their community, established successful businesses and pursued an avid passion for flying. At the time of their deaths, they were building a new home and hangar for their collection of planes and memorabilia.
Dick's community service included membership on the Manchester School Board, vice-chairman of the Burr and Burton Seminary Board of Trustees, a member of the Manchester Fire Department, trustee of the Manchester Rod and Gun Club, member of the Mt. Aeolus Pistol Club and Southern Vermont Homebuilders Association.
His interest in flying began as a child when his father and a friend rebuilt a WACO. He trained on a J-3 Piper Cub as a member of the Equinox Flying Club. After earning his private pilot's license, he took aerobatics instruction and graduated from Bill Thomas' Fly for Fun School in Florida in 1970 and later earned his commercial license. He was president of the Equinox Flying Club, treasurer of the Equinox Airport Association, an Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association member and a member of the Vermont Flying Farmers since 1971. Over the years, he was honored as the Airport Operator of the Year, Flying Farmer of the Year, International Flying Farmer Delegate, Region Director, President and Man of the Year, just to name a few. Without a doubt, a highlight of his flying experience was taking the pilot's seat in the dual cockpit of a P-51, putting the "Crazy Horse" through its paces in March 2002. In commenting on the experience, Dick was heard to say, "an experience I'll always remember. I'm still up there in the clouds."
Nadine worked tirelessly for her family, raising their three children and being instrumental in the lives of her niece and nephews upon the death of her sister, Jennifer Hulett. Community service reinforced her family values in her service as superintendent of the Sunday School of the First Baptist Church and as past matron of the Adoniam Chapter 22 of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a member of the Mary-Martha Fellowship, Garden Club of Manchester, Monday Club, Mark Skinner Library and the Civic Beautification Committee. As a member of the Vermont Flying Farmers she served on the Board of Directors and received numerous honors including Woman of the Year and Vermont State Queen.
Dick and Nadine leave their children, Deborah L. and her husband, Ken McGraw, of Manchester Center and Jeffrey D. and his wife, Sandra Z. Hayes, of Kennett Square, Pa.; and grandchildren Jonathan and Alan McGraw and Derrick, Brandon, Emmett and Hunter Hayes. Family members include Dick's brothers, Roger Hayes of Arlington, Hamilton Hayes of Manchester Center and LeRoy Hayes of Winhall and Nadine's brother, John Marsden of San Juan Capistrano, Calif.; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family. Their son, Eric, predeceased them.
Calling hours will be on Tuesday, Feb. 24, from 2 PM - 4 PM and 7 PM - 9 PM at the First Baptist Church in Manchester Center. A memorial service at the church is planned for Wednesday, Feb. 25, at 11 a.m., with interment at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church or the Manchester Rod and Gun Club, in care of Brewster Funeral Home, P.O. Box 885, Manchester, 05255. *
